CALEDONIA On the fifth anniversary of the Douglas Creek Estates standoff between Six Nations and the OPP, natives are calling on the government to return to negotiation..

“We want the government to come to the table again with a new mandate because their mandate didn’t solve anything,” said Ruby Montour, a native spokesperson Monday at Monday’s anniversary celebration.

“And we want them to bring mediator because they flat out tell us this isn’t going to work.”

Caledonia five years later

About 25 natives and supporters marched peacefully down Argyle Street to the site of the former Douglas Street Estates subdivision that sparked a tense confrontation between natives, who occupied the site, and police, who tried to clear the native protesters in a botched raid.

The land was eventually bought by the provincial government and held in trust.
