Toronto man jailed for illegal cigarettes

A Toronto man was sentenced to 45 days in jail last week after pleading guilty to possessing illegal cigarettes.

Van-Ba Nguyen faced four charges related to possessing 298,800 unmarked cigarettes. He pleaded guilty in the Ontario Court of Justice in Toronto Jan. 20.

Between Jan. 28, 2010 and May 6, 2010, Ministry of Revenue investigators found Nguyen in possession of unmarked cigarettes on four separate occasions. In one instance, ministry investigators and the Haldimand OPP found 120,000 illegal cigarettes in a vehicle Nguyen was driving through Haldimand County.

Nguyen was also fined $7,000 and will be on probation for two years. He was convicted of a Tobacco Tax Act offence in October, 2009.
