Illegal smoke shack demolished

January 11, 2011 Hamilton Spectator

SIX NATIONS The Six Nations Band Council is demolishing an illegal smoke shack on Hwy. 6.

The Broken Promise Smoke Shack near Hwy. 6 and Fifth Line is being torn down under a court order.

Brant County OPP media officer Larry Plummer said OPP was assisting the Six Nations Police, Six Nations Band council and the sheriff in executing the order. Reports say several cruisers were on the scene.

The Hwy 6 bypass has been closed during the police operation.

The shack was the first tobacco stand erected on the former Robinson property just outside Caledonia and has been the scene of shooting, two fires and numerous confrontations. It was run by Jeff Henhawk and Six Nations say he was illegally squatting on the land, purchased about 22 years ago.

Henhawk was ordered off the land by court order in 2008.
