CORNWALL (Staff) -- Socrates Kallas of Montreal, Que. was convicted of possession of 500,000 unmarked cigarettes in the Cornwall Provincial Offences Court.
Kallas was charged by the Ministry of Revenue's Special Investigations Branch following an incident on Dec. 12, 2009, during which the Ontario Provincial Police stopped a vehicle in South Glengarry Township and discovered the unmarked cigarettes.
Kallas was sentenced to 90 days in jail, and fined $185,000. He must also pay $46,250 to the Victims' Justice Fund.The unmarked cigarettes were seized and forfeited to the Ontario government.
