Christie Blatchford does not need any defending from me. The award-winning author and columnist is tough and experienced.
She’s also one of the most empathetic and gifted journalists in North America and has an ability to rip through cluttered nonsense and downright lies and cut straight to the common sense and heart of a story.
This is what she has done with her new book, Helpless, about the native protest and illegal occupation in Caledonia, Ont., and the appalling way in which politicians and police allowed local people to be intimidated and assaulted.
She doesn’t take political sides in the book and doesn’t really address the claims of the various parties. Her main concern is for the breakdown of law and order and the plight of innocent Canadians.
Which should, in a sane world, make her a voice of wisdom and moderation and, to the vast majority of Canadians who are indeed sane and moderate, she is admired. But the law, police and state that exist to protect those of us who are sane and moderate against the violence and temper of the insane and the extreme have once again let us down.
Blatchford was recently booked to speak at the University of Waterloo in southwestern Ontario.
Before she could begin her lecture, however, a group of political thugs screamed Blatchford and the audience were Nazis and racists, and then three of them ran onto the stage and chained themselves together by their necks.
Their leader, one Dan Kellar, is a PhD student in geography who teaches courses in — wait for it — climate change. Asked why he was acting as a little fascist, Kellar replied Blatchford was like the Nazi propagandist Julius Streicher.
“He was hung for presenting information which led to misunderstanding and hatred,” Kellar explained. Actually, comrade, the word is “hanged,” but then PhDs aren’t what they were, especially when your tax dollars are funding them.
“It’s no longer a free-speech issue,” Einstein continued. “When people are lying about the situation, it’s just not appropriate to have them speak.”
In other words, if he and his buddies decide we are wrong, if they disagree with us, if they find anything we say to be in any way offensive, they will use violence and threats to silence us.
What is most bothering is why the police or campus security did not drag these idiots from the stage and arrest them. The explanation as to why they didn’t is that there were safety concerns. So what?
Criminals sometimes get hurt, but that’s the risk you take when you commit a crime. And occupying a stage so as to prevent a speech by an invited guest is a public order offence punishable under the law.
But, once again, the hoodlums won. As when Ann Coulter was silenced, Mark Steyn forced to change venue, pro-lifers attacked and when native gangsters had their way in the very Caledonia so ably described by Blatchford in her book.
If we don’t stop this dictatorship of the leftist mob now, when will we do so? Remember, the speech you attend, the book you want to read, the place you want to visit could be next.
