VAUGHAN, Ont. - A group calling itself Conservatives Against Fantino won't be allowed to register as a party under that name for the upcoming byelection in Vaughan, north of Toronto.
Elections Canada spokesman John Enright says the group's name is too similar to the Conservative Party of Canada, which could have confused voters.
The group is protesting against former provincial police commissioner Julian Fantino, considered a frontrunner in the campaign.
One of the group's founders, Gary McHale, has openly criticized Fantino and the provincial police force for their role in the 2006 aboriginal occupation in Caledonia, Ont.
Byelections will take place on Nov. 29 in Vaughan and two Manitoba ridings.
Vaughan was previously held by Liberal Maurizio Bevilacqua, who was elected the city's mayor last month.
