Woman fined $93,000 for unmarked cigarettes

A Cornwall court issued a $93,000 fine against a St. Regis, Que. woman after she was caught with 250,000 unmarked cigarettes in her vehicle.

Eliza Sherwood was convicted of possession of unmarked cigarettes in the Ontario Court of Justice in Cornwall on Sept. 16. The charges were laid after the OPP searched a vehicle in South Glengarry and found the contraband cigarettes on April 22.

The search was part of an operation conducted by the Cornwall Regional Task Force (CRTF) in the Cornwall area to identify and stop suspected individuals involved with unmarked tobacco products originating from the Cornwall Island area.

Sherwood must also pay $23,250 to the Victim's Justice Fund.

The CRTF includes members from the Ministry of Revenue, Special Investigations Branch, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, the Canadian Border Services Agency, the Cornwall Community Police Service and the Ontario Provincial Police.
