Residents of an Ontario town who've fiercely fought to prevent a gas-fired plant from being built in their community have the support of a celebrity environmental activist.

Erin Brockovich is expected to speak out against Ontario's plan today in Oakville, just west of Toronto.

The government announced today that it has shut down four coal-fired units, and hopes to replace dirty coal-fired generation by adding cleaner energy.

Minister of Energy Brad Duguid says the government has been listening to residents, but adds he's not in the position now to make a final determination on the plant.

Ms. Brockovich is an activist who helped construct a legal case against a gas electric company in California.

She became a celebrity after her story was made into a feature film starring Julia Roberts, who won an Oscar for her portrayal.
