A crew from Hydro One will be back on Six Nations territory later this month after being urged off the reserve by members of the Men's Fire group.
The hydro workers were clearing brush and trees along a transmission corridor between Plank Road/Highway 6 and the Grand River.
On July 26, the crews were working in the area when they were stopped by community members.
Later, Chief Coun. Bill Montour issued a request that the workers be allowed to complete their trimming in peace and the hydro company meet with the community to explain the work being done.
"We had held a public meeting in early July in Caledonia," said Hydro One spokesperson Daniele Gauvin, "to inform the community that it was urgent with the hot summer weather that we do some maintenance work on the hydro lines through the area."
After the work was stopped due to people "wanting to find out more information", Gauvin said Hydro One met and spoke to members of the community again and now plan to return to work between Aug. 26 to 30.
"The work will start at the Hartford Junction area and move toward the Caledonia transformer."
Work includes trimming and removing the heavy brush that's an immediate threat to the lines, then workers will return to the area at the end of September to do some broader maintenance work that includes grinding down some vegetation to leave it behind as food support for local wildlife.
Gauvin said the heat causes power lines to sag and droop, meaning that brush must be cleared underneath them.
"It may seem to some people like there's a lot of space being cleared under the lines but we have to account for the summer sagging and ensure that our crews are going to be safe."
The growing vegetation and the hot weather together created a risk of power outages or even personal injury along the transmission corridor.
Hydro One is assuring local residents it will try to minimize any disruptions caused by noise and dust but it has to follow safety precautions and procedures.
Montour has asked the community to respect the need for the job to be completed .
