Task force makes eight tobacco seizures

The Cornwall Regional Task Force (CRTF) made or assisted in eight contraband tobacco seizures over the last two weeks in Cornwall and South Glengarry Town-ship.

These seizures resulted in the arrest of three individuals who face charges under the federal Excise Act 2001 and the provincial Tobacco Tax Act for possession of a tobacco product not properly stamped. Two Cornwallities and one Akwesasne, New York resident were arrested as result. Police also arrested and charged Kenneth Simser, 40, of Cornwall and Kevin Bovin, 40, of Cornwall, who was also charged for breach of a peace bond.

Charles Jason Hill, 30, Hogansburg, New York, was charged with dangerous driving and flight from police.

All three were held in custody for a bail hearing.

Items seized include seven vehicles, a boat, a boat trailer, 4,050 resealable bags each containing 200 contraband cigarettes, 300 kilograms of fine-cut tobacco contained in 12 garbage bags, 2,700 cartons of PT brand little cigars in various fruit flavours.

During this period, the CRTF made several seizures at local marinas as well as assisting the Cornwall Community Police Service during their execution of a search warrant. If anyone notices suspicious activity, please contact the CRTF at 613- 937-2800 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
