Task force arrests 11 people in series of tobacco busts

A total of 11 people have been arrested in a series of contraband tobacco busts by the Cornwall Regional Task Force in recent weeks.

Dating back to July 21, the CRTF has made or assisted in contraband tobacco seizures, including 10 in Cornwall, five in South Glengarry and two others at the Cornwall Port of Entry.

All 11 face charges under the federal Excise Act 2001 and/or the provincial Tobacco Tax Act for possession of a tobacco product not properly stamped.

Of those arrested three are from Cornwall, two from Kahnawake, and another two from Akwesasne. The remaining individuals hail from Summerstown, Brockville, Addison and Athens.

The busts also resulted in the arrest and charges of the following six people:

David Rickard, 42, from Gatineau, Que.; Jason Lee Mac-Gregor, 26, from Cornwall; Christopher Cameron, 27, from Cornwall; David Wayne Campbell, 37, from Cornwall;

Todd Harold Lamothe, 42, from Cornwall, Tekaratanken David, 19, from Akwesasne.

Items seized in the arrests include:

* 10 vehicles described as 2004 Chrysler Sebring, 1999 Dodge van, 2002 Chevrolet Express van, 1999 Chevrolet Suburban, 2002 Jeep, 2000 Chrysler Town and Country, 1999 Plymouth Voyager van, 1998 Chevrolet Blazer, 2005 Chevrolet C4500 Duramax Diesel truck, 2003 Dodge Ram 1500 pick-up truck

* three vessels described as a 6.71 metre Chriss Craft runabout boat, a Checkmate power boat with a Mercury 150 Pro Max Sport outboard motor, a 7 metre Sundowner cuddy boat with an inboard motor

* five trailers described as a 13 metre Blair trailer, a utility box trailer, two boat trailers and a home built flat trailer

* 16,329 re-sealable bags or cartons each containing 200 contraband cigarettes

* 705 kilograms of fine cut tobacco contained in 10 hockey bags and 50 garbage bags

* 6 grams of marijuana

* 30 cans of Coors Light beer

* $425 Canadian currency.
