WINNIPEG - Gov. Gen. Michaelle Jean is to attend the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's final day of ceremonies and events in Winnipeg today.

The commission's first of seven national public events was held at The Forks in downtown Winnipeg and featured learning exhibits and a chance for survivors of Indian residential schools to tell their stories.

Jean plans to take part in a ceremonial offering to the sacred fire then witness a sharing circle and a powwow before delivering her address to the gathering.

The $60-million commission is headed by Manitoba's first aboriginal judge, Murray Sinclair.

It's part of the $4-billion compensation and healing package announced by the federal government.

The last residential school closed outside Regina in 1996 and about 85,000 former students are still living.
