OTTAWA — Police and border officials made a series of large contraband tobacco seizures near the Canada-U.S. border in Cornwall, resulting in the arrest of 14 people over the past two weeks.
Almost 2,000 kilograms of loose tobacco and 3.2 million cigarettes were confiscated, along with nine vehicles.
The 14 people arrested have been charged with possession of a tobacco product not properly stamped. One person has also been charged with failing to stop for police and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.
Cornwall police and the Canada Border Services Agency made the arrests and seizures from May 6 to May 17. Four seizures took place at the border and seven took place in Cornwall and South Glengarry, Ont.
