Educators vote in favour of troubled school

OTTAWA - Delegates to the Council of the Canadian Association of University Teachers have voted to lift the censure imposed on First Nations University of Canada.

The council imposed censure 17 months ago because the troubled Saskatchewan school had refused to deal with financial mismanagement allegations.

Both the federal and Saskatchewan governments cut funding to the aboriginal university in February because of the ongoing problems.

In late March, Ottawa put up $3 million so students could finish their school year and Saskatchewan recently restored restored its $5.2 million in funding.

Council Executive Director James Turk says recently the university has made changes to deal with its problems and hopes Ottawa will see fit to restore its full funding.

The vote Friday means academic staff in Canada and internationally will no longer be discouraged from accepting appointments to First Nations University.
