The writer is a PhD candidate? Sorry, but her comments about a "white" Caledonia with "white" privileges should be setting off alarms.
No matter what your race, religion or creed, the law applies to everyone, on every day of the year. That's the point of Gary McHale's actions.
Does racism exist? Unfortunately, yes. But we have to figure out how to differentiate between racism and the rule of law. To do otherwise invites anarchy.
