CALEDONIA (Mar 29, 2010)

For the second consecutive week an anti-racism rally in Caledonia was cancelled by organizers after opposition showed up.

Merlyn Kinrade, co-founder of Canadian Advocates for Charter Equality, indicated the rally in the parking lot of the Lions Hall was called off because OPP refused to keep the two sides apart and he was concerned about some in the opposing crowd.

Canadian Union of Public Employees led the opposition of about 50 people, who walked over and mingled with a group gathered with activist Gary McHale around 2 p.m. yesterday.

The rally was quickly cancelled. A second, unrelated rally was announced for April 11 at a smoke shop near the disputed former Douglas Creek Estates at 2 p.m.

Kate Milley, who is with CUPE Local 3902, would not say whether they plan to be at the next rally.

McHale said he would be initiating charges this week against two OPP officers in connection with the event.

OPP Constable Mark Foster said the OPP respects everyone's right to freedom of speech and lawful assembly. When asked if the OPP should have separated the sides, he said the event was an anti-racism rally and the people were representing anti-racism.
