Natives protest HST

TAXES

February 26, 2010 Brantford Expositor

Pic Mobert families is why Ward and other band members braved a brisk wind on the Trans- Canada Highway Thursday to protest Ontario's looming harmonized sales tax.

Protesters waved aboriginal flags, anti-HST signs and beat traditional drums near the Pic Mobert's traditional powwow grounds about 20 kilometres west of White River.

Pic Mobert and most of the province's aboriginal community fear that the HST -- a blend of the five-per-cent federal tax and eight-per-cent provincial levy -- will hike the cost of essentials like heat and hydro.

Motorists and truckers passing through Thursday's protest were delayed for less than a minute, receiving information pamphlets and coupons for free coffee.
