Haldimand Mayor Claims Province Leaning Towards Giving DCE to Six Nations

February 22, 2010 CD98.9

Attorney General Chris Bentley says no decision has been made on whether the province will hand disputed land in Caledonia to the Six Nations. He was responding to a report in the Hamilton Spectator quoting the local mayor as saying the government was ``leaning'' towards giving the Douglas Creek Estates to the aboriginal band council. The newspaper says Haldimand mayor Marie Trainer made the comments after talking with Bentley late Friday. The Ontario government paid nearly $16 million for the land, which was seized and occupied by protesters from the nearby Six Nations reserve almost four years ago. Excluding the cost of the land, the simmering land dispute in Caledonia has cost taxpayers $64.3 million. That figure doesn't include the recent out-of-court settlement between the Ontario government and a Caledonia couple, Dana Chatwell and Dave Brown.
CD98.9 will have comment from local MPP Toby Barrett tomorrow morning in the news with Renee Berube.
