Mayor: Questions Surround Samsung Deal

January 29, 2010 CD 98.9

Haldimand Mayor Marie Trainer has written the province's Minster of Energy and Infrastructure asking for clarification on the new green energy deal with Samsung. Last week, Ontario announced a $7 billion deal with the Korean company which would include a parts manufacturing end on the Six Nations Reserve. Trainer asks Brad Duguid, on behalf of the public, what the province is receiving in return and whether the deal "will end land claims, end barricades and Aboriginal occupations in the Haldimand Tract, or is this just a gift?" Trainer also mentions a conversation she had with Duguid in which he reportedly told Chief Bill Montour that Douglas Creek Estate lands "may end up in (his) hands." The DCE lands are currently Crown property, and the letter requests "an explanation of rewarding bad behavior without the people of Ontario receiving something in return." Trainer does congratulate Six Nations on their part of the Samsung deal.
