Caledonia Dispute - An Expensive Issue

January 7, 2010 CD98.9

The bill for the land dispute with Six Nations protesters in Caledonia is 64.3 million dollars and rising. Ontario's Ministry of Aboriginal Affairs says the bill does not include 15.8 million dollars the province paid for the former Douglas Creek Estates, which was occupied by protesters from Six Nations. Ottawa kicked in 26.4 million dollars to reimburse the province for buying the subdivision and to offset policing costs. The total cost also does not include the recent out-of-court settlement between the Ontario government and a Caledonia couple who were suing the province and OPP. The bill could rise even more since a half dozen related lawsuits have yet to be heard.
