A man caught trying to bring bootleg cigarettes across the St. Lawrence River is going to prison.
Eric Stiles, 33, was sentenced to two years behind bars after being convicted under the Excise Act of smuggling cigarettes for which the excise tax hadn't been paid.
Stiles was caught in October with a boat load of the illegal smokes he was attempting to bring into Canada from the U.S. via Wolfe Island.
Federal prosecutor Robert Zsigo recommended prison instead of a fine, noting that Stiles already has outstanding fines totalling more than $300,000 as a result of previous convictions for the same offence.
