Discount cigarettes seized

December 1, 2009 Cornwall Standard Freeholder

Last week appears to have been a slow one for the RCMP Cornwall customs and excise unit

Between Nov. 20 and 26 a total of 1,150 cartons of contraband cigarettes were seized and one person was arrested during an incident reported by the RCMP in its weekly press release.

In a typical week, the RCMP usually reports a few more seizures and arrests.

On Nov. 21 at 4:30 a. m., OPP officers saw two vehicles leaving the parking lot of a local restaurant near the St. Lawrence River in South Glengarry Township.

One of them was an older model Chevrolet Venture van, which was missing its front Ontario licence plate.

When the driver saw the marked police vehicle, he sped away. Eventually the van stopped and two males fled on foot.

An OPP police dog helped locate one of the men. RCMP officers were contacted to assist and seized 1,150 cartons of Discount Full Flavor cigarettes inside the van.

A 49-year old male from Cornwall was arrested and faces a charge for possession of a tobacco product not properly stamped.

He was released to appear at court at a later date.
