Council questions motives behind flag raising rally

An organized rally to raise the Canadian flag adjacent to the Douglas Creek Estates raised questions among councillors about the motives behind such an effort.

Councillor Grice updated Council and staff on Monday of the flag-raising event that took place in Caledonia last Sunday afternoon.

"If you put 100 people in a room and asked them if there was two-tiered policing, they would say yes," said Grice. But the flag-raising event, according to Grice, moved nothing forward.

According to Grice, about 50 people assembled at the Lion's Hall Sunday afternoon. The intent was to raise a Canadian flag across the street from DCE. While this group was gathering, about 75-100 people gathered on DCE and 20 or so people gathered at a home adjacent to DCE.

"I live in a quiet court with no concerns. A helicopter flew overhead Sunday afternoon for about three hours," said Grice. "Caledonia wants to move forward, but we need to bring it forward in a positive direction."

He also noted there was only one arrest on Sunday.

"How did what happened this weekend help clean up the DCE? Did this put the community on a straight path? Tourism season is just around the corner; what does the outside public think of us?" Grice asked of Council.

Councillor Sloat said it was use and abuse of the Canadian flag for personal gain, and it was a disgrace.

Councillor Boyko requested that concerns be put in writing and delivered to the organizers of the event noting this is not helping the community move forward. Council agreed with the recommendation.
