Smokes, booze, dope found in smuggler's truck

By SUN MEDIACornwall RCMP say a cube truck transporting suspected contraband cigarettes and booze was heading for the Hamilton area when it was stopped on Hwy. 401 Thursday.

OPP stopped the truck for a commercial vehicle inspection in the westbound lanes near Cornwall. Police found cardboard boxes of contraband cigarettes,

which included 6,200 re-sealable bags of smokes, 1,000 cartons of Discount Tips Canadian Blend brand smokes, 101 cartons of Native All Natural brand smokes and 500 cartons of Canadian brand smokes.

Police also seized four bottles of liquor and found a small amount of marijuana and hashish.

The truck was rented from an agency in Brantford and was on its way to Six Nations, police said. Police believe the contraband cigarettes were picked up from an organization in Kahnawake Mohawk Territory in Quebec.

A 51-year-old man from Ohsweken, Ont. is charged under the Excise Act.
