Four charged for disrupting dump protest

Quartet interfered with Cayuga dump foes, natives

CAYUGA   – The OPP have arrested four men for disrupting a peaceful demonstration at the controversial Edwards Landfill on Brooks Road at Highway 3 east of Cayuga.

The group Haldimand Against Landfill Transfers (HALT) and members of Six Nations were demonstrating against renewed truck transfers to the landfill.

“Despite warnings from the OPP, some persons attempted to disrupt the peaceful demonstration,” Constable Paula Wright, OPP Haldimand media relations officer said in a statement.

All for men , between the ages of 21 and 28, have been charged with mischief. One is charged with being disguised with intent.

The men are not from Haldimand, they are from London, Toronto, Kitchener and Kettleby, Ont.

“The OPP reminds citizens the right to peaceful demonstration and protest does not include unlawful activity,” said Wright.  “The OPP will not tolerate criminal behaviour.”
