The people of Kenora will have their say tonight at a public hearing on the disbandment of the Kenora Police Service. The Ontario Civilian Commission on Police Services will have a two member panel in the city for the hearing. Seven months have now passed since Kenora City Council voted to disband the KPS, chosing the OPP as the sole provider of policing in the city.
The panel will review the OPP proposal Thursday night to determine if it is adequate. A decision is expected within 45 days. Meantime, the Kenora Police Services Board will have its day in court on September 23rd. The police board is seeking a Superior Court of Ontario interpretation of Section 40 of the Police Services Act.
The police board maintains its approval is needed to disband the KPS. The board voted against the decision to disband in March. The court decision could have province-wide implications in the future.
