Developers reach out

Suggest some taxes go to Six Nations

Brantford (Aug 20, 2008)

A group of area developers has modified its proposals, including having the city give a percentage of its taxes to Six Nations, to try to end the troubling land claims dispute.

The Haldimand Tract Good Neighbours Coalition is now recommending Ottawa collect some revenue in consideration of development on behalf of Six Nations and, in exchange, protests that have halted various projects be suspended while talks on land claims are concluded.

The first proposal suggested Brantford could get the taxes back after the claims were settled.

The coalition, which has attracted the support of the Six Nations elected band council, was formed in June to try to break the impasse over the land claims disputes.

It is organizing a meeting for Aug. 28 at the Best Western Brant Park Inn for community leaders.

Those in attendance will hear how Elliot Lake and the Serpent River First Nation struck a development agreement last fall.
