OPP: Clear brush to halt tossing of debris

Ontario Provincial Police are recommending trees and bushes be removed around the Stirling Street overpass to try to end debris being thrown from it onto cars travelling on the Highway 6 bypass.

The OPP, who have made the recommendations to the province and Haldimand County, believe this will make pedestrians and vehicles on the overpass clearly visible to help reduce the activity.

Police have made these recommendations after a spate of incidents in recent weeks in which debris has been tossed from the overpass.

The OPP has stepped up patrols and surveillance in the bypass area and is receiving help from Six Nations Police. It also seeks the public's help to catch the perpetrators.

"This behaviour poses a serious risk to public safety," acting Inspector Michael Rigby said yesterday. "Such actions are dangerous and we are doing all we can to prevent further occurrences here."
