Canada's negotiator in the Caledonia talks says he's disappointed Six Nations has decided not to return to the negotiating table until next month. But Ron Doering says he's expecting them to have a response to the $26-million offer Canada made to settle the Welland Feeder Canal claim in Dunnville.

Doering said yesterday he's learned Six Nations negotiators are meeting Saturday "to develop a response to our offer," which was made 10 months ago on the claim which dates back to the 1820s.

Canada and Ontario had hoped for talks to resume this month, but Doering learned through a report in The Turtle Island News that Confederacy chiefs need more time and are looking at coming back to the table in September.

"The ball is clearly in their court," Doering said, noting Confederacy officials have not contacted him directly. "I'm hoping they'll have a response to our offer. I'm anxious to hear from them."
