Caledonia CHCH trial adjourned

ST. CATHARINES (Aug 8, 2008)

The trial of a woman charged in connection with an attack on two CHCH cameramen has been adjourned until later this month to set further dates for trial.

Audra Taillefer, 41, faces two counts each of robbery and intimidation and one count of assault in relation to the high profile incident, which involved two cameramen and native protesters in June 2006. She has pleaded not guilty to all counts.

The cameramen were attacked in the parking lot of Canadian Tire in Caledonia, steps from the disputed former Douglas Creek Estates, which Six Nations have occupied since February 2006.

Under questioning from defence lawyer Dean Paquette, Ontario Provincial Police Constable Kevin Yun told the court yesterday he was sure three males and one female approached a cameraman.

"I don't know if the punches were connected (or if) they landed," he said. "But punches were thrown."

Yun said he stood behind his prior statements that three men punched the cameraman in the face, despite testifying moments earlier that it had only been two.

Paquette also questioned the officer as to why there was no mention of a female committing assault on the cameraman in his notes or in a statement given to Ottawa police.

In a previous statement, played for the court by the prosecution, Yun said there was a woman who was arguing with the CHCH cameraman and assaulted him.

Four others face charges in connection with the attack.

Taillefer will be back in court in Cayuga on Aug. 13.
