OTTAWA - A 19-year-old Akwesasne woman faces charges after a police pursuit on Highway 401 in South Glengarry on Tuesday.

Ontario Provincial Police said an officer tried to stop an eastbound Chrysler on the highway at about 10:45 p.m., but the driver did not stop.

The vehicle entered a U-turn area and headed west along Highway 401 before leaving the highway at the McConnell off-ramp for Cornwall. The vehicle then hit a spike belt deployed by police and stopped a short distance away before the driver was arrested.

A woman who was not named by police was charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, flight from police officer, use of plate not in accordance with the Highway Traffic Act and failing to surrender a licence under the Highway Traffic Act.

She is scheduled to appear in Alexandria court on Oct. 8.

OPP said contraband cigarettes were found and seized from the vehicle. The investigation into that matter was turned over to Cornwall RCMP.
