Police in Winnipeg shot and killed a man early Saturday morning.

Police have released few details about the incident, but they said it occurred when they responded to calls for help at a city residence.

They said the victim was a 26-year-old man, and he was brandishing a knife. Police said they tried to use a Taser on the man, but they were not able to subdue him with the electric stun gun. An officer then discharged his gun, police said.

The man was taken to hospital where he died of his injuries. Police said the homicide unit is investigating, a standard procedure in fatal shootings involving police officers.
