Fantino rejects criticism of his role in negotiations with Brant

Julian Fantino says he supports the judicial process and rejects recent
criticism of his actions during the 2007 rail blockade near Deseronto by Shawn
Brant and his supporters.
"I am disappointed that this matter is being portrayed by some in the
media and the political arena as something other than the successful
negotiation and peaceful resolution of an intense and possibly volatile
situation," Fantino said. "I am confident that the judicial process will
determine the outcome of these criminal proceedings in a fair, impartial and
unbiased manner.
"The OPP fully supports everyone's right to freedom of expression and
lawful protest. I have consistently stated that we were then - and are still
prepared - to take lawful action, if and when warranted, to protect both.
Public and officer safety have always been our paramount considerations.
"Consistent with the recommendations from the Ipperwash Inquiry," Fantino
said, "the OPP continues to work collectively with legitimate First Nations
leadership and communities to ensure that both the interests of participants
during lawful protests and public safety can be served in the best way
possible. The positive outcome of this incident and that of many others speak
for themselves."
Fantino pointed out that because the criminal case is still before the
courts, he can't make further comment.
