Six Nations protesters shut down worksite

BRANTFORD (Jul 12, 2008)

Six Nations protesters will be maintaining a presence at a worksite after a construction company removed its equipment from the site following another land claims protest.

About 50 protesters moved onto the site of Kingspan Insulation in the city's west end yesterday because they claim it is being built on land Six Nations never surrendered.

It follows a larger protest Monday that shut down work at five sites.

Brantford has obtained an injunction and passed bylaws to keep protesters off the sites.

"The move to develop our lands without our consent is a blatant attack on our identity," said a statement sent to The Spectator last night. "By enforcing these injunctions, this is a declaration of war."

Protester Steve Powless said a presence will be maintained. There had been talk that tents might be put up. Brantford police were there but made no arrests.

Later, police said they will review the circumstances of the protests to determine a course of action.
