(Staff) -- Cornwall RCMP seized 526 kilograms of fine cut tobacco Wednesday from two females in a truck.

In conjunction with the Akwesasne Mohawk Police Service, the RCMP seized 22 garbage bags of tobacco worth more than $47,000.

The driver, a youth, and the passenger, a 20-year-old female resident of River Road in Akwesasne, N. Y., were taken into custody and questioned. The truck, valued at $17,000, was also seized by the RCMP.

Also, when Akwesasne police stopped a driver Wednesday, officers noticed a strong tobacco odour as well as blankets covering cardboard boxes of cigarettes. Officers from the Cornwall RCMP detachment were contacted and seized 1,000 resealable bags of cigarettes, which represents 200,000 cigarettes valued at $22,000. The driver, a 59-year-old male, of Water Street, was arrested.
