Land claim talks aimed at ending the ongoing aboriginal occupation in Caledonia, Ont., have broken off between Six Nations and government negotiators.

A spokesman for Ontario Aboriginal Affairs Minister Michael Bryant says no date has been set for talks to resume, but the parties could come back to the table in August.

Greg Crone says Six Nations wanted more time to consider Ottawa’s $26-million offer to settle a claim concerning the Welland Canal, which federal negotiators wanted dealt with by September.

There are reports that aboriginal negotiators are dismayed over the situation in Brantford, where the city obtained a court injunction to keep aboriginal protesters away from construction sites on land claimed by Six Nations.

The negotiations — involving both levels of government — are aimed at ending the two-year occupation in the southern Ontario town where protesters have occupied a former development site for more than two years.
