Protesters gather near courthouse

BRANTFORD (May 31, 2008)

About 200 people gathered across the street from the Brantford courthouse yesterday in a show of support for Six Nations protesters fighting an injunction request.

The gathering, which took place in Victoria Park by a monument of Mohawk leader Joseph Brant, ran throughout the first leg of court proceedings.

Speakers expressed the need for everyone to work together to resolve outstanding issues and recounted segments of Six Nations history.

"We've come here today to share with you," Phillip Skye said. "To provide a bridge of understanding."

"These illegal prosecutions of our people need to stop, as we are merely honouring our roles to Mother Earth," speaker Jacqueline House told the crowd.

Information pamphlets were also handed out.

A statement was also issued which read, in part: "As one unified body we the Haudenosaunee are an unstoppable force that the Crown governments of Canada and Ontario can neither deny, nor silence."

The rally began about an hour before the court proceedings started, wrapping up just before those inside took their first break.

The crowd broke up as the hearing wore on.
