Land claim offer is acceptable

The $26 million offer by the federal government to Six Nations for the Welland Canal land claim is fair and reasonable. The land in question is under water. A return of some land in compensation would be a logistical nightmare.

Moreover, for the Six Nations, which is becoming more structured and autonomous, the idea that the government be responsible for acquisition of land on its behalf is becoming antiquated and would leave room for further abuses of power (just look at what the ambiguity in duty to consult is causing).

The offer is a positive step forward for all and will strengthen the delicate, newly-formed relationships among the parties and among the natives themselves.

The Six Nations should take the offer, provided the amount is supported by a breakdown of how it was calculated.
