Progressive Conservative leader John Tory's harsh criticism of the Ontario government's handling of the native occupation in Caledonia is justified, but Tory has yet to come up with a solution other than to use the courts - something that has already been tried, but not enforced. Tory wants to switch from soft tactics to his so-called "rule of law" approach. He wants to end negotiations until the occupation is over, refuse payments or concessions to occupiers, and he wants to ensure court injunctions are enforced.
Premier Dalton McGuinty has been weak and indecisive on Caledonia, but other than a full-scale armed sweep of the property and a permanent, high-profile and expensive armed presence, no one, including Tory, has come up with a good alternative.
