Re: Caledonia Redux, editorial, Jan. 17.
This editorial on native lawlessness in Ontario poses the question: "How did it come to this?" The answer: It's because we have gutless politicians. What we are seeing in Caledonia is the logical extension of the government's wilful blindness toward native thuggery. Throughout Canada, we have witnessed an irresponsible double standard in terms of the law as it is applied to Canada's aboriginal population. Any attempt by our police forces to counter native lawlessness is quickly termed "racist" and the implied threat of armed violence is usually not far behind. So are we really serious about actually doing something this time?
Please, send in the police or the army with the following rule of engagement: enforce the laws of this country by any and all means possible. If not, at least let the citizens of Caledonia arm themselves, because it appears they can expect little help from those they've elected to protect the common good.
