Haldimand County Council wants to meet with MPP Toby Barrett early in the New Year to talk about land claims, the impact they are having on the county and a host of other issues to determine common goals.

Councillor Lorne Boyko said the last time the local provincial representative formally met with county council was in the first years of the new county. That means that last meeting was more five or more years ago.

In addition to discussing land claims and their impact council may also want to discuss a the possibility of a new nuclear power plant at Nanticoke, which council tentatively supports while Barrett has been less than enthusiastic.

Boyko said the tobacco issue could also come up.

Barrett strongly supported the recent farmers' convoy that gave 200 bales of raw tobacco to the Six Nations.

Councillor Buck Sloat said the convoy took a Norfolk problem and dropped it on the doorstep of Haldimand County. Haldimand has enough difficulties without having them imported.
