Police seized more than 1.7 million illegal cigarettes worth a total of nearly $200,000 following two searches in the Cornwall area on Nov. 23. RCMP and the Canada Border Services Agency seized 2,500 cartons of cigarettes along with 2,957 resealable bags of cigarettes following a search of a horse trailer and a second vehicle at a property in Osnabruck Centre. No one was arrested. That same day, an officer from the Akwesasne Mohawk police stopped a van in Cornwall at about 5:20 a.m. The RCMP searched the van and seized 3,500 bags of contraband cigarettes manufactured in the U.S.. The driver, a 55-year-old Alfred man, was charged under the Excise Act for possession of a tobacco product not properly stamped.
