Native firm refuses work

Approximately one year and five months ago (and only one month before DCE), I had the opportunity to contract out some home renovation work to a local Ohsweken firm. To say I was pleased with the results would be a gross understatement. The job was done in a professional and timely manner. I was so impressed that I have (on numerous occasions), passed along the name to many others I know who need similar work done.

Last week I called the same firm to get a quote for work I need done on my new residence. I am deeply saddened to have been told that "they refuse to do work in Caledonia". All along I have tried to keep an open mind in regards to the DCE situation and have had many heated discussions in defense of aboriginal tactics in dealing with land claim issues.

Ironically and for the first time in my life, I have been directly subjected to racism and I have to tell you…it felt like being punched in the gut. Me…probably the most peaceful and least racist person I know…trying to do the right thing…putting the situation at DCE aside…and getting slammed for my efforts.

Please explain to me…if retailers in Caledonia flat out refused to serve the aboriginal peoples…what would happen? I shudder to even consider the realm of possibilities…
