I have another recommendation for the Ipperwash report. “Don’t break the law.”
That is exactly what Dudley George and others decided to do. They defied band council and seized a provincial park which got them into conflict with the police. Would Mr. George have been a law abiding citizen who didn’t at the same time provoke the police he would not have been shot. The lesson is simple and doesn’t require extensive investigations.
Harris or his government were not responsible for Mr. Dudley’s death and the latest report actually states that on page 675. Dudley George’s actions and moral choices got him to where he is now.
In Caledonia we have the same problem occuring again. This acceptance of lawlessness and the legitimization of violence and vandalization as a means for protest has to stop. The police is trying to uphold the law and must look the other way at the same time. Everyone who engages in criminal activity should be apprehended and prosecuted.
Natives should not be exempt from this. And for future reference, if you don’t want to get shot by the police, then I suggest that you don’t break the law.
