"The police made many mistakes on their own, but what Mr. Harris did was act too fast and close off many options, including negotiations and communications.
"We hold him partially responsible for what happened because of acting too fast," Sam George said after yesterday's release of the Ipperwash inquiry report.
George acknowledged the report found the former Conservative premier didn't direct the police operations at Ipperwash, although he made a serious racial statement at a key government meeting.
Asked what he'd say to Harris if he was there, George said he'd ask him to apologize.
"I would ask him to apologize to my brothers and sisters," George said.
Moments later, Harris's lawyer told reporters there would be no Harris apology.
George praised the inquiry report, saying it's a huge and wise step forward for both natives and non-natives.
The most important recommendation in the four-volume report is that everyone should work together, he said.
While it's clear from the report the Ontario Provincial Police made many mistakes during the Ipperwash crisis, it's also clear they're working to correct them, George said.
George said he'd also like to thank Ontarians for taking the time to listen and spending the money for the inquiry.
That will help to resolve future protests, he said.
