BRANTFORD - A small group of protesters from Six Nations held a brief demonstration at the site of a new development here yesterday morning.

About a dozen people arrived at the First Gulf Development site at Wayne Gretzky Parkway and Henry Street around 6 a.m. A $40-million retail power centre is planned for the Wayne Gretzky Parkway.

The plan to protest the site was announced at a social function on the reserve the night before, held to mark the first anniversary of the protest at Douglas Creek Estates in Caledonia.

"It is a major land issue for Six Nations," said spokesperson Janie Jamieson.

She believes development was supposed to start Monday.

On Wednesday, people at Douglas Creek Estates marked the first anniversary of the occupation of that site. Unlike the Caledonia site, where protesters settled on the site and never left, the protesters have left the First Gulf Development site. A warrior flag is posted on a nearby abandoned building.
