Cottagers on Ontario's Bruce Peninsula have been given an extra month to pack up their belongings and leave land they have been leasing for 40 years.

The Chippewas of Nawash First Nation decided not to renew the long-term lease and had given 68 renters on Hope Bay until Wednesday to clear out of their cottages.

Chief Paul Nadjiwan says they have offered a one-month extension to give the cottagers more time to remove their belongings from the properties.

The federal government had been leasing the property on behalf of the band since 1965.

The 40-year lease ended in 1995, but cottagers were allowed to stay for another 10 years while the band decided whether to redesignate the land for leasing again.

In December, cottagers received letters from the federal government informing them they had two months to remove their belongings and leave the cottages.
