Hope Bay cottagers kicked out
Written by Diana Meder

The future remains uncertain for a group of Bruce Peninsula cottagers who've been evicted.

About 70 families have lost access to their cottages in Hope Bay and have been told they need to contact the Chippewas of Nawash about collecting the contents by the end of January.

Its a dispute dating back more than a decade between the band and Indian Affairs over talks aimed at getting new lease agreements for the cottages which are on First Nation land.

Chief Paul Nadjiwon commenting through an official release to Bayshore Broadcasting News says over the winter, the Band Council hopes to consider future use or possible designations of the land based on the band's best interest.

Indian and Northern Affairs says the Chippewas of Nawash believe they now own the cottages.

Indian Affairs has so far taken no position on that issue.

They're instead advising cottagers to get their own legal advice.

The lease agreements under dispute have been in effect since 1940 but expired in 1995.
