Donald Marshall Jr. will appear at a native healing circle in a bid to resolve a conflict that initially brought him before the courts on a charge of attempted murder. The process involves a group of community elders from the Membertou First Nation in Cape Breton. They will offer suggestions on how to heal the rift between Marshall and another community resident, Duncan Gould. The healing circle is scheduled for December 19th. Marshall is alleged to have attempted to run Gould over, and to have threatened him in an incident a year ago. The initial charge of attempted murder has since been withdrawn. Ryan Toney of the Mi’kmaq Legal.
Support Network says healing circles are a traditional approach to dealing with conflict. Rather than an admission of guilt, there is an assumption that something went wrong between the two men and they are each asked to offer an explanation. Toney said the elders then offer suggestions on how to remedy the situation. The final outcome of the circle will be made public.
