Al-Jazeera & Native History

From the Edmonton Sun; (as posted on the Reclamation Site)

PORTAGE LA PRAIRIE -- Long Plain First Nation has drawn international attention recently from an unexpected media outlet: Al-Jazeera.

A team from Al-Jazeera's soon-to-be launched English television network has been filming a documentary about the experiences of aboriginals in Canadian residential schools. They chose Long Plain as a representative example of that experience and spent two days earlier this week visiting with elders and survivors of the residential school system.

Ghida Fakhry, an anchor with the Arab TV network's bureau in Washington, D.C., visited the proposed site for the Indian Residential School Museum of Canada, just west of Portage la Prairie. She said the saga of First Nations has been of interest to her for some time.

Although I can already see the McTale's of this world crying about the "Six Nations/Al-Qaeda connection", it might not be a bad idea to write Al-Jazeera and tell them about the problems with Kanestaton.

To me, the way the Caledonians have acted towards the Native protestors speaks volumes about what Canada is really like. This country likes to promote itself as a land of fair-play, justice and opportunity...which is true if you are rich, but Aboriginal people and recent immigrants know that that concept is a chimera.

Highlighting the fact that the very same Christian religions which have people decrying "Islamofascism" and suicide bombers etc happened to oversee and allow the rape and abuse of Native children for decades would be an excellent expose. Added to that is the fact that the Government is trying to get out cheaply by offering a slight payout to the few survivors left would make for compelling T.V. around the world.

Secondly, to get Timmer's and other's video of the Caledonians attacking the Six Nation protestors, and the SN people fighting back would emphasize that this country is two-faced in its approach to miniorities. While we are in Afghanistan trying to help them out and establish the rule of law, Canada is in turn ignoring its own laws respecting Aboriginal people, and have done nothing to address the Haldiman question for decades now.

I'd love to email Al-Jazeera and explain this stuff, and use this site as a reference for their research purposes.

Now that Timmer has pulled his videos, is there anyone else who has good footage of Caledonians acting poorly?
